Have you ever been on public transit, and you can hear someone's music blaring out of their earbuds? Now, we've all been told to turn the music down on occasion, but when someone's tiny little earphones sound loud to you, what do they sound like to person wearing them?
We don't need to be reminded that loud sounds can damage our hearing, permanently, so we must adhere to rule of thumb when wearing headphones, earphones, or have the stereo cranked up:
too loud.
This rule of thumb should be considered when you're working with any standard earbuds or headphones.
There is also a misconception about the source of the music or sound. For instance, if your teenager is going to crank his music it can be just as damaging from his speakers as from his personal headset. Because, it's the decibel level that reaches the ears and how long it is listened to that are the key factors. No matter what the sound source is, if that sound is 85dB or more, there are limits to how long a person can safely listen to it.
Just remember that music doesn't necessarily sound better loud, and it's definitely not going to sound better if you damage your hearing you can't hear it at all. |
